Most tooth discoloration is due to foods and beverages like coffee, tea, red wine, spices or dark-colored berries, or from tobacco products. Food colorings can also stain teeth. Foods that have a high acid content play a role in tooth discoloration by temporarily softening tooth enamel so stains can penetrate deeper and more quickly. Poor oral hygiene including not having routine professional cleanings can also result in dull, dingy, discolored teeth.
Professional in-office teeth whitening uses a special gel that's applied to the visible surfaces of teeth. The gel is specially formulated to penetrate the outer layers of teeth without harming them, removing stains and yellowing that can make teeth look unattractive and unhealthy. Once the gel is applied, a light is focused on the teeth for a specified period of time to activate the gel and help it be more effective. A flexible mouth guard is used to hold the lips away from the teeth during treatment so the gel isn't washed away by saliva and to ensure the light reaches all surfaces of the teeth for greater penetration and more consistent results. In-office whitening treatments can provide dramatic results in just an hour.
Yes, in addition to in-office whitening treatments, we offer home whitening kits so patients can whiten and brighten their teeth at home either as a “stand-alone” treatment or as a touch-up treatment between professional teeth whitening treatments. The at-home kit uses a custom-fit tray created in a dental lab using an impression of the patient's teeth so the tray fits comfortably, preventing leakage while also ensuring the gel reaches every tooth surface. The trays are worn for a couple hours each night for up to a week until the desired shade is attained.
Some people may have mild sensitivity, but it will resolve once treatment is complete. Having a dental exam before whitening can ensure any tiny fissures or cracks are treated first to reduce the likelihood of sensitivity.
We accept most dental insurances. Here is a short-list of some of the most popular plans we accept. Please contact our office if you do not see your insurance provider listed.
