Bridges Q&A

by B. Jeffrey Kay, DDS

What is a dental bridge?

A bridge is a device made of metal and porcelain that's used to replace one or more missing teeth, “bridging” the gap left by those teeth. The metal framework of the bridge supports one or more crowns or prosthetic teeth that are tinted and shaped to blend in with the surrounding teeth for a natural-looking, comfortable result and improved function. The framework attaches to the teeth on either side of the gap left by the missing teeth either using clips (removable bridges) or strong adhesive (permanently-affixed bridges). The supporting teeth are covered with crowns to provide extra support and protection. Both the crowns and the prosthetic teeth supported by the bridge will be shaped and tinted to blend with the surrounding teeth.

How is a bridge made?

Bridges typically require at least two office visits. At the first appointment, the teeth that will be used to support the bridge will be prepared for crowns. A small amount of the tooth surface will be removed to ensure the crowns fit comfortably. Next, an impression will be made of the gap and the neighboring teeth and sent to a dental lab where the bridge and crowns will be custom made. Temporary crowns may be used to protect the teeth while the permanent crowns and bridge are being made. At the second visit, the crowns will be affixed to the teeth using strong dental adhesives, then the bridge will be carefully fitted and attached using clips or adhesives. A final polishing and adjustment will ensure the crowns and bridge fit comfortably.

What kind of care does a bridge require?

Bridges can be cared for in much the same way as natural teeth, with regular brushing and flossing and routine office visits to ensure they fit properly and to make sure the supporting teeth and the surrounding gums are healthy. Removable bridges are a little easier to care for than permanent bridges which require some skill and practice to ensure the gums beneath and around the bridge are kept clean and healthy.
